Ohio law requires dog owners to renew their dog licenses each year between December 1st and January 31st. 

Having a dog license isn’t only a law, but it’s also a lost dog's ticket home! When your dog has its license attached to its collar, its assigned license number is all that is necessary for our Office to identify its owner. If you do not buy your dog’s license during this renewal period, Ohio law requires a late fee equal to the cost of the permit.

Lakewood resident Tori Dubis started volunteering at City Dogs Cleveland last year regularly taking dogs out for long walks after being in cages all day.  Recognizing she couldn't adopt every dog she walked, Tori wanted a way to help the shelter get their dogs adopted.

She put her illustration skills to work and created artwork highlighting various dog breeds. Then she printed them up on quality paper and started selling them on Facebook, donating all the proceeds to City Dogs.  It was a hit and a great fundraiser.

Afterward many of the shelter supporters asked Tori to do portraits of their dogs or their pets who had passed.  With all these requests coming in, she created a Facebook group to showcase these pet portraits.   Now anyone can get an illustration of their beloved dog or cat.

Tori is hoping things return to pre-covid times so she can volunteer more frequently at City Dogs Cleveland.

Best practices for Responsible Pet Ownership include:

• License your dog with Cuyahoga County
• Keep current on all vaccinations, including the required rabies vaccine
• Spay or neuter your dog
• Keep your dog controlled and on a non-retractable leash of 6 feet in length
• Provide proper training to assure your dog is a well-adjusted and well-behaved pet
• Be aware of the costs associated with dog ownership and the personality traits and needs of various
  breeds before adopting
• Provide your dog with sufficient food & water, daily exercise & attention, and adequate shelter & supervision.
• Pick up dog waste on and off your property and control excessive barking
• Maintain liability Insurance
• Comply with all municipal dog laws

Lakewood loves its dogs! The 2018 L.C.O. Chapters 505 and 506 contain the laws about animals in the City of Lakewood. Highlights in reference to dogs are:

• All dog breeds are permitted in Lakewood. An owner’s control of their dog is important. A new
  rigorous classification for dogs and required restrictions based on aggressive behavior or injuries
  caused has been added. (Ch. 506)
• Preventing Dogs at Large continues to be a focus. Penalties have been enhanced for loose dogs or
  dogs not controlled by someone of suitable strength. (Sect. 505.02)
• Every dog must be registered with Cuyahoga County every year. Visit any Discount Drug Mart
  or cuyahogadogs.com to register. Annual registration fees are currently $20/dog. (Sect. 505.04)
• Dog leashes must now be no more than 6 feet in length and leashes may NOT be retractable.
  (Sect. 505.02(c))
• Enhanced animal cruelty law prohibits leaving dogs outside under unsuitable conditions which can lead to dog aggression. (Sect. 505.09)
• Beginning September 30, 2018, all persons keeping dogs in Lakewood, including those who rent, must maintain at least $10,000 in liability insurance for injuries or damage caused by their dogs. Check with your insurance agent. (Sect. 505.24)
