They serve as both emotional support and a catalyst for physical health improvements. The presence of a dog can significantly elevate an owner's mood; simply petting a dog has been shown to release oxytocin, the love hormone, which fosters feelings of happiness and reduces stress.

Regular walks or playtime with a furry companion provides essential exercise and encourages a shift in perspective, promoting mindfulness and connection with the present moment. Moreover, dogs are natural social facilitators, helping their owners forge new friendships with fellow dog lovers at parks or community events, enhancing social interactions and reducing feelings of isolation.

The unconditional love and loyalty dogs offer create a sense of purpose and responsibility, making them excellent partners for those navigating life's challenges. This bond often motivates owners to maintain a healthier lifestyle, whether sticking to a regular exercise routine or engaging in outdoor activities, ultimately leading to long-term health benefits.

Furthermore, having a dog has been linked to lower blood pressure and decreased risk of heart disease, which translates not just to improved mental health but also to tangible physical wellness.

In fostering a nurturing environment, dogs invite us to experience life fully, cultivating joy, laughter, and an enduring sense of belonging. Every moment spent together is a rewarding journey towards a happier and healthier life. Embracing the love of a dog opens the door to a brighter existence, one wagging tail at a time.

Research shows that a well-fulfilled dog is not only healthier but also exhibits better behavior, fostering a joyful atmosphere, especially in communal spaces like our dog park.

Regular exercise is paramount, as active dogs release endorphins that promote feelings of happiness, reducing anxiety and destructive tendencies. Equally important is socialization, which allows dogs to interact with other dogs and people, enhancing their emotional well-being.

Providing mental stimulation through puzzle toys or training sessions can also keep their minds sharp and engaged, preventing boredom that may lead to negative behaviors. A consistent routine offers dogs a sense of security, while positive reinforcement strengthens the bond between dog and owner, ensuring they feel loved and valued. Additionally, understanding canine body language helps us recognize when they are stressed or overstimulated, allowing for timely interventions to keep the playful spirit alive.

By cultivating a nurturing environment that meets these needs, we not only enrich their lives but also strengthen our connection with them, making parks like ours truly joyful spaces for every dog to thrive.

Start by consistently providing an ample supply of fresh, clean water, making sure to refill their bowl frequently to combat dehydration effectively. You might also want to explore pet-friendly cooling mats or blankets that can assist in regulating your dog's body temperature during the hottest parts of the day.

To make hydration more engaging, try freezing their favorite treats inside ice cubes or whip up homemade frozen dog treats using low-sodium broth and delightful fruit pieces, transforming hydration into a tasty adventure. On particularly hot days, plan your walks for the cooler morning or evening hours to protect their paws from scorching pavement.

Establishing shaded areas in your yard with umbrellas or trees is essential, allowing your furry companion to find refuge when temperatures soar. Regular grooming is another crucial step, as it improves air circulation by removing excess fur that could trap unwanted heat.

Always be vigilant for signs of overheating, such as intense panting or excessive drooling, and be ready to provide a cooler environment if necessary. By prioritizing your dog's comfort during these summer days, you can forge cherished memories together, enjoying the warmth and sunshine while ensuring their happiness.

She put her illustration skills to work and created artwork highlighting various dog breeds. Then she printed them up on quality paper and started selling them on Facebook, donating all the proceeds to City Dogs. It was a hit and a great fundraiser.

Afterward many of the shelter supporters asked Tori to do portraits of their dogs or their pets who had passed. With all these requests coming in, she created a Facebook group to showcase these pet portraits. Now anyone can get an illustration of their beloved dog or cat.

Tori is hoping things return to pre-covid times so she can volunteer more frequently at City Dogs Cleveland.

FAQs About Canine Influenza

What are the symptoms of Canine Influenza?

The symptoms of CIV infection resemble those of “Kennel Cough”, with a persistent cough lasting 10-30 days, lethargy, loss of appetite and a fever. Dogs may also develop sneezing and nasal and eye discharge. More serious cases may develop a high fever (104 – 106 degrees) and clinical signs of pneumonia. It is recommended that dogs diagnosed with Canine Influenza should be isolated from other dogs for 4 weeks.

How is Canine Influenza diagnosed?

The Dog Flu cannot be diagnosed by clinical signs because it can resemble other canine respiratory illnesses. Tests are available to diagnose and identify the strain of influenza.

How is the Dog Flu Transmitted?

Canine Influenza is spread through coughing, barking, and sneezing. It can also be transmitted through objects such as water bowls, kennels, collars and leashes. There is no evidence of transmission of the canine influenza virus from dogs to people. However, it has been transmitted from dogs to cats. Currently, there is no Canine Influenza vaccine for cats.

How contagious is the Dog Flu and could my dog die?

Canine Influenza is highly contagious with more than 80% of dogs exposed to the virus contracting the Dog Flu. Most dogs recover in 2-3 weeks. Fatal cases resulting in pneumonia have been reported in dogs, but the fatality rate is low at less than 10%.

How can ITD help prevent the spread of Canine Influenza?

Initially by requiring dogs to be vaccinated for the virus and acute observation in changes of dogs behavior or coughing. In addition, the virus appears to be easily killed by disinfectants commonly used in daycare and boarding facilities. We are committed to educating our staff on best practices for health and cleanliness.

Additional information on Canine Influenza can be found through this link: American Veterinary Medical Foundation

Coyotes are cautious animals that are common throughout Cuyahoga County and all of Ohio. Coyotes have coexisted amongst us in Lakewood for years, rarely being noticed. Today, there are at least three alpha pairs, and their groups, living in Lakewood. An alpha pair lives in the Madison Park vicinity, another pair lives in the South West Corner, and the third pair in the Lakewood Park vicinity (see map.) Coyotes are located in dense urban populations all across the United States including Chicago, Los Angeles, and even New York City.

Recently, many residents have reported seeing coyotes near Lakewood Park. In February, a West Highland White Terrier named Brody, living near Lakewood Park was chased and bitten while outside at 6:45 am, in a fenced yard. Thankfully, owners Barbara and Mark Mehle did exactly what they were supposed to do. They ran off the coyote by yelling and waving their arms above their head.
